The Seax, also called Scramasax or Sachs, is named after the Old High German word sahs, which translated as a knife or sword. From the 4th century BC, this slash weapon was first used in Scandinavia, later and until the 10th century AD also in Central and Northwest Europe. Many saxes were used as burial objects and were often associated with the Vikings and Normans.

The sax is a slash weapon and had many different shapes and lengths over time. While short saxes were often used as cutting tools, daggers or carving knives, there were quite longer variants, which were guided similarly to a sword.
