In the Middle Ages and early modern times, the coif was the headwear of the married women, while unmarried ones were allowed to leave their heads uncovered.This habit is derived from the saying ""come under the hood"". Throughout Europe, the hood is an integral part of many traditional costumes.In addition, the coif also had a practical benefit - to protect the hair from dirt, eg in the household or when working in the fields.
