John Lee Gunto Katana
This Japanese military sword from the 19th century is called the Gunto, with a design based upon French military sabers. But in order to bring the troops closer to the spirit of the samurai code of honor (Bushido), it was decided from 1934 to bring the styling closer to the katana.
The swords of ordinary soldiers were mostly manufactured industrially and therefore of serviceable quality. On the other hand, the swords of high-ranking military personnel were often equipped with traditionally forged blades from master swordsmiths (while the rank of an officer could be recognized by the colours of the sword's sageo). In contrast to the katana, the sageo was mounted on the handle end of the Gunto.
This sword has a shinogi-zukuri-style blade. Below the decorated tsuba there is a traditional button with which you can pull the sword out of its sheath. The Gunto Katana's fittings brown, as is the cotton handle and the varnished sword scabbard.
