Greek Sword, Alfedena type, with bone grip
This sword type featuring an elegant, strongly tapering blade is represented on many ancient Greek ceramics and was also used by the Italic soldiers between the 6th and the 5th century B.C.
Our replica is based on a beautiful artefact discovered in Alfedena, in the Italian Abruzzi region. This city, which was founded by the Samnites, was a strategic settlement of the Carecini tribe and was later conquered by the Romans in 298 B.C.
Its particularly spectacular scabbard features a substantial chape and is fitted with a rectangular, openwork-patterned upper band which fully encases the sword's guard and is quite an eye-catcher. Such a sword can be found for example on the tomb statue of the Italic Capestrano Warrior, who wears it directly on his breastplate.
Details:
- Overall length: approx. 83 cm
- Blade length: approx. 65 cm
- Weight: approx. 1.2 kg
- Blade material: high carbon steel
- Hilt and cross guard material: bone, reinforced with steel plates
- Leather-covered wooden scabbard with brass and bone fittings
