Bishop's Mantle made of Flat Rings, all with Wedge Rivets
A bishop's mantle is a chain mail collar covering the neck, the shoulders and the upper part of the chest and back. It was particularly favoured by the German Landknechte (mercenary soldiers) in the 15th and 16th centuries and is woven similarly to a mail coif. The shape of this piece of chain armour explains its name, as it greatly resembled the very wide-cut collar of a bishop'smantle.
The bishop's mantles made by Ulfberth are modeled on historical examples. They feature a jagged edge. A riveted leather liner protects the area around the neck and the neckline is adjustable by means of straps and genuine late medieval brass buckles.
The FRW chain maille type: This particular weave is made of flat rings, all riveted with wedge rivets (triangular rivets). It was a common mesh for chain armours of the European late medieval period. The weave is 4 in 1. This type is called FRW (Flat Ring Wedge rivets).
Details:
- Flat rings, all wedge riveted
- Large enough to cover the shoulders
- Jagged edge
- Inner ring diameter: approx. 8 mm
- Ring: approx. 1.6 mm edge
- Finish: natural (lightly oiled)
- Weight: approx. 2.2 kg
