Kerstin Blodig/Valivann - Rhythmic ballads from both side of the north sea
Songs on this CD:1. Vallevan
trad.; arr. Kerstin Blodig & Mick Franke
The ballad about the sailor Vallevan is known throughout Scandinavia. This is
the Swedish version from Närke. In 1981 the Swedish band "Groupa" released an
incredible recording of this medeival ballad which has always been a favourite
of mine. - The project`s name is derived from the Norwegian character Valivan.
2. Fause Fause Hae Ye Been
trad.; arr. Kerstin Blodig & Mick Franke
A well-known melancholy love song from Scotland.
3. Horpa
trad.; arr. Kerstin Blodig & Mick Franke
This eerie ballad is known in a whole kaleidoscope of different versions all
over Scandinavia, the Celtic countries and England. Here is a selection of
verses from one of the Norwegian versions of this bloody ballad which I learned
from the singing of Kirsten Bråten Berg.
4. Mystical Man
Kerstin Blodig
A song about a handsome water troll, nøkk or kelpie. These water spirits can be
found in both Scandinavian and Scottish lakes or rivers and just love to lure
people to their doom. Usually, they appear at the lakeside in shape of a
beautiful horse or a human being, sometimes with wet hair entangled in
waterweeds.
5. The Seal Man
Words trad. arr. K. Blodig./ music: Kerstin Blodig
This haunting story can be found in Scotland as well as in Norway. Sule Skerry
is a large rock in the sea west of Orkney. Since the story is set on the west
coast of Norway it seemed fitting to write a Scandinavian-sounding tune to the
Scottish lyrics.
6. Sven Svane Vtrad.; arr. Kerstin Blodig & Mick Franke
A Norwegian folk song of which many different versions are known. This melody
comes from Hallingdal. I heard this one first on an amazing recording by
"Tiriltunga".
7. The Cruel Sister
trad.; arr. Kerstin Blodig & Mick Franke
8. Kjetta
trad.; arr. Kerstin Blodig & Mick FrankeA children's song which I learned from "Chateau Neuf Spelemannslag". In the
middle of this song you can even hear the pussycat weaving the "Mason's Apron",
a well-known Irish session tune.
9. Lullaby
trad.; arr. Kerstin Blodig & Mick Franke
