Buckles for Roman Phalerae Chest Harness, Tinned Brass, Set of 2

A phalera is the Roman equivalent to a military medal or trophy. In Ancient Rome, these ornate disc-shaped plates were awarded to Roman soldiers who had distinguished themselves in battle. During parades, a highly decorated Roman legionary (called a phaleratus) would exhibit his phalerae on a leather chest harness worn over his armour. The harness would usually close on the back with metal buckles.

The buckle we offer here is cast from brass and tin-plated. The buckle itself is 2 mm thick, the hinged chape 1.5 mm. As the chape has no holes, mounting it to a leather strap will require drilling.

The brass buckle is perfectly suited for your own DIY project or as a replacement/spare piece for Roman chest harnesses, for example our product no. 1016676500. Mounting hardware is not included in delivery.

An ideal accessory for Roman re-enactment.

These fine buckles are sold in pairs.
