Belt Buckle - Midgard Serpent in Urnes Style
Together with Hel and the wolf Fenrir, the Midgard Serpent (also called Jörmungandr or World Serpent) is one the world's three tormentors in Germanic mythology. Jormungand lives in the depths of the great sea that surrounds Midgard. His body is so exceptionally large that he encircles the entire earth und grasps the end of this tail in his maw. When he awakens and thrashes the ocean, great floods devastate the world of the mortals. At the same time, the serpent biting his own tail is a pregnant symbol of the unity and eternal recurrence of all things. On a spiritual level, it also bespeaks deeply hidden forces that unfold when the time comes and can now and again be channeled and taken advantage of.
By the third encounter between Thor and Jörmungand at the Ragnarök, Thor succeeds in striking the Midgard Serpent dead with his hammer Mjölnir.
The Urnes style
... is the last of the six known Norse art styles and persisted until the beginning of the 12th century. It superseded the Ringerike style by the middle of the 11th century. The Urnes style is characterized by delicate representations of intertwined animals. It was named after a small Norwegian locality on the Lustra Fjord.
